Volkswagen’s next generation Passat will feature four-door coupe styling along the lines of the Mercedes Benz CLS. Due for an upgrade in 2008, the all new Passat’s design will see the car getting an arching roofline and wedge profile. The sleek bodywork, namely the strongly curved roof and wrap-around headlights should provide for improved aerodynamics. Hopefully, the rear-door’s roof won’t be as low as this rendering from Germany’s Autobild suggests. The squared of rear portion will be smaller than the current model to allow for the tapered roof, and the new Passat may even by less roomy. We’re sure most owners would be happy to trade off some functionality for a little style. The range-topping VR6 model will come with a 3.6L V6 developing 280hp with drive going through the front wheels, while the base model starts with a small 170hp 1.4L turbo.

Porsche debuted its 2007 911 Targa 4 and 4S at the Paris Motor Show, in addition to the superlative 2007 911 GT3 RS. The Targa concept has been around since 1966, and the new Targa 4 and 4S give buyers the option of having the open sky experience of a convertible without loosing the rigidity of a solid roof. The 4.2 pound glass roof of the Targa 4/4S can be retracted to provide 4.8-square feet of open air. The glass rear hatch compliments the roof by continuing the open-air impression all the way to the rear of the car, and the roof frame is embellished with a polished aluminum strip to hark back to the days of the removable top Targas of the first generation 911. There is also a semi-translucent, black-cloth sunblind to protect the occupants from the sun’s death rays.

AMG presented the results of its latest Mercedes-Benz performance manipulation with the S 63 AMG at the 2006 Paris Motor show this week. The eight-cylinder S 63 is blessed with AMG’s new 6.3-liter, 525-hp powerplant, which boasts the highest specific output and torque of any series-produced naturally aspirated eight cylinder in the world. The 465 ft-lb of twist from AMG’s monster V8 turns the S-class into a weapon of mass rubber destruction with the ability to sprint from 0-60 in 4.6 seconds. Other changes include special tuning for the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed transmission, AMG body styling, AMG alloy wheels, AMG sport suspension, and an exclusive AMG interior. The autobahn-burning S 63 AMG is also offered in both standard and extended wheelbases, just in case you need to haul a couple of your close NBA player friends around at extra-legal speeds.
