May be one day drivers will lie or stand driving their cars. But nowadays - from the moment of the invention and until today - the car is equipped with seats.

The seats of the early vehicles resembled modern kitchen furniture: straight back and the seat itself (mounted at a certain angle once and for ever). There haven’t been any changing possibilities. By the end of 1930s the seats got at least two adjustments - the angle of the back incline and lengthwise (closer-farther from the steering wheel).

The beginning of the 60s saw the revolutionary changes in the shape of the seats. The seats and the backs got deepenings to make the driver and the passengers feel more comfortable in manoeuvres.

From that time on we’ve been dwelling on the good (or not very good) side support of the seats.

The head-rests, nowadays an integral attribute of a seat, is the invention of the end of the 60s. At the moment a head-rest is an important part of a seat where a screen, speakers and security system can be installed.

A modern car seat is a multifunction device. Some of them are quipped with back heating, massage rollers and multimedia.

If the electronics see a pre-crash situation, a seat will take the most safe position. You can adjust a seat in any possible way, moreover you won’t have to move anything - the computer will “remember” everything himself.

The idea of “saloon-transformer” was invented about 50 years ago. But it was developed only 10-15 years ago. It is great to have a possibility to remove or replace the seats.

In order to make the life of a seat longer one has to maintain it properly. Nowadays it not a big problem: there lots of auto vacuum cleaners, brushes e.t.c.

Nevertheless sometimes one has to have the seat professionally cleaned (from $40 to $150 according to  the type of the upholstery).

When the seat are worn out one has to change the upholstery. The cost may vary from $100 to $280 per seat. Many people replace a textile upholstery by a leather one.
