BMW 1-series 3-door hatchback or coupe looks young and fresh in comparison to 5-door version. The appearance of the car resembles a pill-capsule, but the interior looks more like a bathyscaphe with lots of small bull’s-eyes. The sitting position of a driver is a little higher than usually and it creates a feeling of safety and comfort, because the saloon is hardly seen from the outside. It is even more pleasant to be inside the car in dull weather, admiring “warm” orange highlight and dark roof of coal-like color, which makes you feel relaxed and resembles a warm plaid. The only thing that seems to be not perfect about the car - the lack of space in the back seats, and more to the point - in order to get to the back of the car you’ll have to carry out unspeakable body movements.

At the same time the driver seat is incredibly comfortable. You will be able to adjust it to you using 5 various regulations and make it your bed. To the right of the seat there is a small iDrive system control wheel. When at a halt, the wheel is easy to manipulate, but while driving it could be used only for changing radio stations that are reflected on a huge screen with a vertical cursor (like in old radio receivers). But if you want to change into the CD mode, it could be problematic even driving at a low speed. In general, the exterior of the 1-series is a stylish hi-tech. Beige leather with smooth curves and stitches, soft plastic, aluminum inserts and edgings - like a cabinet of a prosperous plastic surgeon. Still the car features one untypical element - the root opens by pressing BMW logo which makes your hands dirty, but the thing is that you want to press the button over and over again (as the device is so unusual for the strict German style).

In order to feel the car one has to strain all the muscles. A 2-liter engine with 6-grade gear-box performs like a stallion, not wanting to lower the gear or jumping off the tracks because of wide tires (205/50 R17). Automatic gear-box delays could be explained by small race, because the gear-box becomes truly driver-friendly after 2-3 000 km. After 3000 km the car begins to adjust to the driver. While the gas reacts too fast, the brakes are extremely soft and pliable. The short motion of the both pedals makes the driving easier. 5 points out of 5 go to the suspension, which pleases with smooth “swallowing” of all the roughness and stability at turns. By the way, the car is extremely stable on a wet road, but for those who seek adrenalin there is a “DTC” button which switches off the road holding system.

The steering wheel in the car is small and “fat”, and at first sight is seems perfectly ergonomical. But later it turns out to be highly fastidious towards the driver. If you are at a sport steering wheel - concentrate and fight. First of all, the steering wheel is comparatively heavy, that’s why even for a simple maneuver you’ll have to hold it with both hands and keep attentive. Secondly, the suspension and the steering control send the information (sometimes useless) to the driver. That’s why one has to react immediately to the change of asphalt type e.t.c. As a result you won’t be able to relax while driving as even the slightest mistake might cause terrible consequences. During the car you tire hands and eyes. But in the end, while locking the car, you understand that you have won the battle.
According to the official data, having 156 hp the car accelerates to 100 k.p.h. in 8.5 seconds, but the figure is reachable with the manual transmission. Golf GTI accelerates in 7.2 seconds and costs $33 624, Honda Civic - 6.6 seconds and $37 624. 3-Door BMW 1-series with 2.0-liter engine costs $30 810, and the “loaded” 3.0-lier - $41 990.
